Some people are fans of Daigo. But many other people are NOT fans of Daigo. This article is for those in the latter group. And yes, I did completely steal this idea from Drew Magary. So sue me.

Personal history
You already know:
Not only is this the single greatest moment in fighting game history and arguably the genesis of the modern FGC itself, it's the single hypest thing you will ever see Daigo do. That's not because he's washed up (or because he lost to ShinAkuma666 in pools or because he's in jail - fuck you, stream chat). It's just because he's bored.
Seriously, why would I buy a book called The Will to Keep Winning when the guy who wrote it won a couple tournaments AND THEN STOPPED COMPETING?
I mean, look, to reiterate: I'm not saying that Daigo is washed up. I'm just saying that he's in the reunion tour phase of his career. Like, at one point, the Rolling Stones toured because they believed in rock and wanted to do lots of coke and fuck lots of groupies, but these days they only tour because of the coke and the groupies. It's ALMOST the same thing, but you know that you're not seeing the seeing the same Stones these days. That's Daigo: he's still playing the same chords and singing the same lyrics, but deep down you know that he's been operating on autopilot for YEARS. I swear, this is a guy who is at most one hard night of drinking away from pulling a Michael Jordan and retiring in order to play a shittier, more boring game that he sucks at. If he announces a sudden interest in League of Legends some time in the next six months, I won't be surprised at all.
Signature move
The "UmeShoryu," which is Japanese for "an ultra-hard, ultra-unsafe read in the neutral game that would make you call anybody else a scrub."
Seriously, people, can we put this to bed already? We know that Daigo DPs in the neutral game. Sometimes it even hits! Wowee! But how many more times does he have to whiff an "UmeShoryu" like an asshole before we just go back to calling it "guessing"? Or is that never going to be okay because he did ONE COOL THING to Justin Wong ONE TIME a million years ago?
And, again, it's not like he's whiffing his uppercuts because he's washed up. The "UmeShoryu" was ALWAYS a hard read. This was ALWAYS a gimmick. But because it's LOOOOOOOORD DAIGO, he gets away with it. Must be nice.
Why he's getting bodied at Capcom Cup
Again: reunion tour phase. Daigo hasn't won a world championship in seven years. Why? Because he doesn't need to. He has the ABILITY to win a world championship - just look at his results during the CPT season. But Capcom Cup is a grueling test of endurance, and at this stage of his career, Daigo just doesn't have the... what's it called... shit, you know what I mean, it's the... oh yes: THE WILL TO KEEP WINNING.
Plus, c'mon, look at what happens when this guy wins:
Do we really need more of that? No, we do not.
Also, okay, I'll just say it: he's washed up.
"But wait," you say
DDRs, I see you. I know you're there, frothing at the mouth. Chastise me for my unforgivable heresy in the comments.

"A bit of bittersweet news for CYG|Daigo fans today, as Street Fighter's most celebrated player has stated that he will not be participating in any more Capcom Pro Tour ranking events this year.Gee - so much for the will to keep winning. Maybe he should've titled his book The Will to Win a Few Times and Then Do Something More Interesting.
With his recent string of tournament success, Daigo has climbed to the number nine spot on the CPT leaderboards, and now has more than enough points to ensure Capcom Cup berth.
As a result, The Beast has decided to forgo participating in any more events so as not to hinder the progress of players still trying to qualify."
